Another Season Begins

With the start of June another season has begun at Pack Creek. My first ten days of my third season were blessed with some sunny days, a courting pair of bears and a family of eagles, complete with at least two new chicks, taking up residence near the viewing spit. It was interesting to watch the relationship between the courting pair, as they have been dubbed, evolve over the days. The small sow appeared to want nothing to do with the large boar that patiently and persistently followed her around. Early on, a few growls and minor scuffles ensued when the boar got too close or attempted contact, but after several days they fell into a more comfortable routine of tolerant clamming and grazing together. On Wednesday of last week, with seventeen human witnesses present on the south spit, they consummated their relationship (a few times) at the edge of the water at a low tide with numerous cameras clicking away to record the events. Unfortunately, my camera battery had died but I am certain pictures will follow soon from the other rangers. Some new arrivals were spotted in an eagle's nest high in a spruce on the far shore of Pack Creek. Through our spotting scope two small, white fuzzy heads could occasionally be seen bobbing above the edge of the nest. No new or returning cubs were spotted yet, probably due to the presence of boars looking for love. But I'm optimistic that during my next ten days out we'll see some of our regular bears returning with cubs in tow.
Until next time, Dori
