The bear viewing lately at Pack Creek has been somewhat hit or miss which is to be expected for this time of year. There are still a few boars lingering around but the mating activity seems to be coming to a close. We have had a few sows with spring cubs in tow show up. An older female, who broke her leg last year, very surprisingly arrived with a rambunctious little cub on her heels. This particular bear, known as Patches, is estimated to be in her mid twenties. She still has quite a limp but her and her cub appear to be healthy. We've also been seeing a sow with two small spring cubs on a few different occassions (see picture). This sow close approached rangers and visitors at the south spit on two different occassions. She is a habituated bear and it appears that she is trying to get her cubs used to the presence of people. Aside from bear viewing there are two bald eagle nests in view, one from the south spit and one from the viewing spit. Both nests currently have two chicks and they are providing an interesting addition to the wildlife viewing, especially on slow bear days.
